JULY's READING TIP FROM OUR FRIEND Carl A. King - Reading Interventionist https://www.cakingliteraryservices.com
Rather in person, virtual, or on the phone, a vast majority of parents that inquire about reading intervention ask for assistance understanding reading assessments, and how the assessment's categories connect to determine their child's reading progress. In some cases, parents are receiving reading assessment results from multiple assessments simultaneously, which can cause confusion for those who are attempting to understand their child's reading dilimas. This can be especially anxious for parents with children who receive IEP services where it seems assessments never stop. To make matters more confusing, most of the terms on the assessment results are written in language for educators. The experience can be overwhelming for some parents, and a deterrent that keeps them distant from supporting their child's reading growth.
Reading Tip#
It is important to remember that there are 3 critical areas to be analyzed by reading assessments when that assessment is attempting to measure students' reading foundation level, proficiency, and growth. Each measured entry, no matter how minuit or detailed, on a reading foundational assessment is measuring a skill that is connected to one, two, or all of the three critical areas.
THE THREE CRITICAL READING FOUNDATION AREAS BASIC READING SKILLS - READING FLUENCY - READING COMPREHENSION
Basic Reading Skills - the ability of students to see and pronounce words. Areas to build Basic Reading Skills:
- Phonics (clean consonant and small vowel sounds)
- Phonemic Awareness (ability to line sounds/letters into words)
- Reading Rules (consistent rules that accompany sounds of individual letters and letter combinations)
- Decoding (sounding out and spelling words)
Reading Fluency - the ability to read with speed, smoothness, and clarity. Areas to build Reading Fluency:
- Decoding (sounding out words)
- Blending (the ability to say words without saying the word's sounds, and the ability to read sentences completely without decoding words)
- Reading Endurance (the ability stay focus reading for a long period of time)
Reading Comprehension - the ability to understand what is being read. Strategies to build Reading Comprehension:
- Reading Fluency
- Reading Endurance
- Understanding main ideas and supporting details (evidence)
- Knowing the meaning of grade level vocabulary words
- Using context clues to define words and phrases
- Comparing and Contrasting...........
NOTE: The Three Critical Reading Foundation Areas support each other in general and specific ways. Some of the strategies and building areas overlap. Some are prerequisites to others and their growth. All Three Critical Reading Foundation Areas are essential for students to acquire and maintain a strong reading foundation.
